Transferring your domain from GoDaddy

GoDaddy now requires photo identification to release domains for transfer out if you used their private registration service. If you launch a transfer away from GoDaddy without doing this, they will simply refuse the transfer, even after you have confirmed all the transfer confirmation emails and provided the correct auth code.

Many customers transferring from GoDaddy encounter a red message in our transfer section saying that some information is missing or mandatory. This is because it is missing from your GoDaddy registrant whois data. You can easily update the data by following the instructions here.

Step 1: Unlock your domain name

1. Log into your GoDaddy account at http://www.godaddy.com.

2. You will see a black “My Account” button on the upper-left hand corner of the page. Click on this to access your account.

3. In the table on the page that lists your domain names, their expiration date etc. click on the green “Launch” button on the right of the domain to transfer to Gandi.

You will now see the “Domain Details” page that lists all the information of your domain name.

4. In the left hand column, find the line that says “Locked”. Click on the link that comes after it that says “Manage”.

You will then see a pop-up, where you can uncheck the “Lock domain” box and click OK to continue. This will unlock your domain and return you to the 'Domain Details” page.

Step 2: Recover your authorization code

5. Once more, in the left-hand column, find the line that says “Authorization Code:”, and click on the link right after it that says, “Send by Email”.

You will then see a pop-up saying “We will send an email message containing your Authorization Code to the Administrative contact for this domain.”. Be sure you click OK to send the code by email, and again to return to your Domain Details page.

The email was sent to the email address that GoDaddy has on file for your domain's owner.

You can now log out of GoDaddy.

6. Log into your e-mail account and find the mail from support@godaddy.com with the subject line “(yourdomain) » Information You Requested”.

You will see the following line in the e-mail:

Authorization Info: 184"C7FEF09C%D3P

Copy the code (note that the one above is merely an example and will NOT work for your domain). This is the code that you will need to provide to Gandi when you request the transfer from our website.

Step 3: Launch the transfer at Gandi

Go to https://www.gandi.net/domain/transfer and follow our standard transfer process for domain names.

You can follow our tutorial on the procedures to transfer a domain name to Gandi at the following page of our wiki: Domain Transfers.
