Domain name trades

A “trade” is a simultaneous owner change and change of registrar. In other words, the term describes a situation where there is a change of registrant during transfer of a domain name from one registrar to another.

Automatic handle creation when a trade is not allowed

Not all TLDs permit trades. During the transfer of a domain (change of registrar) for an extension which does not allow trades, the owner information must remain exactly the same after the transfer of the domain, since any difference in registrant – including name, handle type, etc – would constitute a change of ownership. Therefore, if you transfer a domain that does not allow trades, and the owner information at the former registrar is not identical to the Gandi handle that is the future owner of the domain, a new Gandi handle will be automatically created in order to allow the transfer.

In these cases, this message will appear on the transfer approval screen just before you confirm the transfer:

“Note: you have not requested an owner change at the registry for this domain, or the registry does not allow that operation. If the current owner is different than the one that you provided, we will create a new contact with the current contact information.”

Automatic handle creation when a trade is allowed, but a change of owner is not selected during transfer

This situation is very similar to the one described above, except it can be easily avoided by checking the owner change box when initiating the transfer. If this box is not checked, and the owner information is not identical between the Whois and the Gandi handle listed as the future owner of the domain, a new handle will be automatically created in order to allow the transfer.

In these cases, the same message listed above will appear on the transfer approval screen just before you confirm the transfer.

FAQ

A new handle was created for me, but how do I log in to it?

The handle was created to match the information visible in the Whois of the domain; therefore, the handle is associated with your email address. You can use this to reset the password.

How do I get this domain under my regular Gandi handle?

Just perform a regular change of ownership according to the requirements of the given extension (TLD).
