Spam

What is an anti-spam filter?

An anti-spam filter allows one to detect and fight against unsolicited commercial e-mail.

How does Gandi's anti-spam system work?

In an effort to protect your mailbox against viruses and unsolicited emails, all emails received by our server are analyzed. If these messages are considered as undesirable, they are not delivered to your inbox.

It is, therefore, possible that some legitimate emails may not be received. In the case of email forwarding, the most simple solution is to change the recipient email address. You can also deactivate your anti-spam filters with your host.

For example, you can use our free email service “Gandi Mail” to create a mailbox.

How can I confront spam?

  • Send a complaint to the spammer's service provider
  • Send a complaint to the web host of the spammer (do not confuse web host with registrar)
  • Send a complaint to the legal authorities
  • Install an anti-virus program, a firewall, an anti-spam filter.

(For advice on reporting spam, visit the spamtrackers.eu page here)

If your email address was obtained by the spammer from the Whois database, and your domain is registered with Gandi, you can use Gandi's anti-spam system for your Gandi handle. To do this, simply go to the Account section. In this area, all you have to do is click on “anti-spam system”.

You will then receive the spam, but it will be clearly identified as such. If you are confident enough in our anti-spam filters, you will then be able to automatically delete these e-mails.

Additionally, this service will not display your real e-mail address in the Whois directory.

In which cases Gandi can act?

Gandi is only a technical intermediary in the registration of domain names. However, this does not mean that Gandi encourages or condones spam. It is quite the opposite. This only means that our position as a Registrar limits what we can and cannot do about it. We can only modify, suspend, or delete a domain only if:

  • The spam is sent via our forwarding service:

such a practice hinders the smooth operation of our technical and general services by taxing our IT system and/or generating many complaints by third parties, and is grounds for the suspension or termination of forwarding services, or even the deletion of the domain name (Sections 14 and 19 of Gandi’s General Terms and Conditions of Domain Name Registration).

  • Personal contact information in the Whois is invalid:

As with any ICANN-accredited registrar, Gandi must assure that the information present in the Whois is valid. If you think that the information present in the Whois is incorrect for a domain name tied to spam that you have received, please contact us here. If the information on the offending website is not updated within 15 days, the domain will be put on hold. If the contact information is clearly false, the domain will then be immediately put on hold (Sections 16 and 19 of Gandi’s General Terms and Conditions of Domain Name Registration)

  • Gandi protects your e-mail address

If you believe that the e-mail address being spammed has been obtained via the Whois directory, you may activate Gandi’s anti-spam system. This is a free, simple, and optional service: you will still get the emails, but your email address is not visible in the whois, so you can easily identify messages sent to you in this way (and filter them if necessary).

More information on this is available here.

What if the spam sender can not be reached?

As with all ICANN-accredited registrars, Gandi has to make sure that the Whois information is valid.

If you believe, for a domain name related to the spam you received, that the Whois information is false, you can ask for an update of the personal data for this domain by contacting our Customer Care department.

If, after a contractual 15-day delay, the personal information is not updated, then the domain name will be suspended (HOLD status). That means that the e-mail addresses and the website will no longer be operational.
