Frequently asked questions regarding the introduction of our new Gandi Cloud VPS billing system (May 2013)

How much do Gandi credits cost?

→ A Gandi credit initially costs € 0.0001 (excl. tax). This price is based on the hourly cost of the smallest possible unit of resources at our current prices. When you buy credits in packs, you can get the same discount that was available under the old system by committing to a yearly share. Thus, if you have A rates, you will pay € 12.75 (15% discount) for a pack of 150,000 credits; for a pack of 1 million credits, you pay € 80.00 (20% discount) and for a pack of 2 million credits, you pay € 140.00 (a 30% discount). (These prices do not include VAT, if applicable.) Prices listed here are for illustration only, and are subject to change.

This credit system is complicated. Are you sure you're not just trying to sneak a price increase past us?

→ For those of you who have taken advantage of our “à la carte” resources, no longer having to worry about staggered expiration dates for different types of resources will be a welcome simplification. You will only have to watch one thing: your credit balance, or the amount of funds in your prepaid account if you choose to go the “on demand” route. As far as prices are concerned, the only change is that from now on you will only pay for what you actually use. If you buy 150,000 credits as a pack (the equivalent of a 'share' under the old system), the rates are actually more advantageous, and even more so when you want to boost your server's CPU, memory or disk space. There is a new monthly charge for data throughput, but this will affect less than 10% of our customers. Only a very few will pay any more under this system. Most will pay less.

I've been paying by the year. Can I still do that?

→ Not exactly. But buying 2,000,000 credits at a time will run your server for 14 months, whereas your yearly share only lasted 12.

Will I still know how much to pay to keep my server running every month?

→ Yes, if your server configuration is stable, the credit usage will be, too. Your account interface will always display a running total of your monthly server cost in your chosen currency.

Are credits refundable?

→ No. For “on demand” credit purchases, credits pay for the resources your server is using as it uses them, so the notion of a prorated refund no longer applies. And if you purchase credits as a pack, you're already getting a big discount, so no refunds will be granted. It is also important to note that credits are valid for 24 months from the date of your last use. This means, you can purchase 150,000 credits and take 10 years to use them, as long as you never go 24 consecutive months without using any resources (we will email you 30 days prior to your credits being forfeited).

Do my servers need to be migrated or anything?

→ No, the migration will be done automatically; the only thing you'll have to do is confirm your acceptance of the new hosting contract, if you currently own IaaS resources.

What if I don't agree with this new system?

→ The new billing system does not affect the performance or operation of your servers. On the contrary, this new billing method is more flexible and saves you money. If you see a problem with your account we might not have foreseen, please contact our support department to let us know. In any case, if you do not wish to accept the new contract, let us know and we will refund your current resources pro rata.

Will there be any downtime of my services?

→ No. No, we are not expecting any downtime related to the change in billing.

Do I get a discount based on my total resource usage?

Not directly; the discount rates are applied individually to each type of hosting resource. For example, if you have four servers each with a single core, you pay the full price per core, or 78 credits/unit/hour (or 312 credits per hour), whereas if you have a single server with 4 cores, it will cost 75 credits/unit/hour (or 300 credits per hour, a discount of 3×4=12 credits). As far as storage is concerned, the number of GBs for each disk is what is used to calculate the discount (and not all the disks on a server).

However, credit pack purchases are still counted when calculating rate scales (A to E), as before – So by spending money at Gandi, you can level up for better prices on prices on all our products.

Will I be charged for Bandwidth?

Mostly, no. Bandwith will now be charged for, but only a few very heavy users will end up paying anything. You will be able to set bandwidth limits on interfaces, up to 500GBPS (Gigabits/Sec). You won't be charged, though, unless you end up transferring over 500 Gigabytes a month. If you pass this limit, then it will cost you progressively more, depending on how much you use.
