====== Whois definition ====== When a domain name is registered, the registrant must provide the registrar of the domain name with valid and up-to-date contact information for the domain. This information is stored in the global whois database. ===== ICANN whois information (public) ===== The whois data must be made visible by registrars both via the web, and via a Port 43 Whois service. Gandi's web-based whois can be found at http://www.gandi.net/whois Gandi respects this obligation and has an open whois policy. The domain name owner and contacts are clearly declared as such in our whois database. ===== Non-ICANN whois information (private) ===== In some instances the contact information of the registrant is hidden. This can happen if: * The domain name is managed by a registry/trustee authority that has a policy against the public disclosure of contact information if the registrant is a private person. This is notably the case with .eu and .fr ccTLDs. ===== See also: ===== * [[en:domains:private-registration]] (Registry rules) * [[en:contacts:privatewhois]] (Handle settings)
